Mingchang Li

PAINRER

Based in Guangzhou, b. 1980

Mingchang Li practice centers on easel painting and a range of related approaches extending from painting, including visual and textual investigations into micro-histories of modern and contemporary periods.

Li constructs his images through layered pictorial foundations that generate an underlying sense of order, which is then reconfigured through processes of subtraction, appropriation, and extraction into narrative surface images. In recent years, the relationship between his pictorial motifs, working methods, and lived historical events has formed a kind of resonant, almost luminous correspondence.

His practice reflects a sustained contemplation on the entangled nature of identity politics and the subtle depths of human experience within modern and contemporary history, where painting becomes a site of continual reflection and reactivation of historical perception.
