Yuan, born in 1990 in Hunan, China, graduated from the Department of Mural Painting at the China Academy of Art. He furthered his studies in Rome, Italy, specializing in the techniques of fresco painting and restoration. He currently lives and works between Shanghai and Hangzhou.

His training in Rome profoundly shaped his understanding of Western fresco traditions and further expanded his sensitivity to materials and their transformations. Transitioning from earlier works in ink and color on paper to current explorations in fresco-inspired mixed media on canvas, Yuan merges mineral pigments, aqueous binders, and layered textures to develop a unique visual language—one that harmonizes Eastern sensibilities with Western material depth.
