Jianwei Ma

PAINTER

Based in Chongqing, b.1980

Jianwei Ma’s paintings focus on mountains and landscapes, constructing a metaphysical space where the permanence of nature intersects with the transience of human destiny. Through anthropomorphic mountain forms, he deconstructs traditional imagery and metaphorically reflects contemporary social alienation, blurring the boundaries between self and other in line with Eastern philosophical notions of “mountain is not mountain, person is not person.”

Ma translates classical landscape traditions into a modern visual language, creating a deliberate sense of dislocation that mirrors the spiritual dilemmas of individuals under rationalized social orders. His compositions layer diverse forms, assembling intricate landscapes that evoke complex “scenes.”
