Lin Zhao

CERAMICIST

Based in Foshan, b. 1986

Lin is a young ceramicist who is deeply nourished by civilization and nature. His works embody the contemporary spirit, context, and interest in the traditional modeling techniques of stoneware and clay strips. This simple and rough material language, combined with the equal and authentic biological groups he created, inspires the infinite energy of the work.

  • Zhao's memory of being alone with ants in his childhood laid the foundation for his way of observing the world based on "biological attributes" rather than "rationality.". In his artistic language, the underlying logic of human thinking and action has long been engraved into genes. Therefore, he placed himself in the entire biological chain and established the coordinate system of humans and animals equally by looking straight up rather than looking down.

  • With the progress of human civilization, we seem to be getting farther and farther away from nature. Is the progress of human civilization meant to resist and remove its biological nature? Human "smartness" is nothing more than the product of natural evolution, and human nature is nothing more than the bloom of physical nature. Zhao's creations use their physical properties to testify to human nature, and use the other creatures to reflect on human nature.

  • Zhao's creation is an attempt to extract a spiritual attribute that transcends ordinary physical properties in visual representations and realistic forms, and uses the soil to naturally reveal the emotions deep in consciousness. Norms and deviations, narratives and flow of consciousness are nothing but the materialization of personal mental images after mixture and balance.
