Through his practice, Song Ning reexamines the history of calligraphy, uncovering its modern applications and exploring the boundaries of the art form. His works integrate elements of graffiti, performance, conceptual art, and the magical use of text.

  • In response to the artificial rupture of traditional calligraphy's lineage, Song Ning has made significant strides to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional calligraphy. Historically, calligraphy thrived within a stable temporal structure, evolving within a closed Hanzi cultural system that reflected unique national aesthetic interests. The advent of the industrial era and the integration of film and television into the arts have revolutionized human aesthetics and expanded the boundaries of artistic appreciation. This shift presents new challenges and opportunities for the study and practice of calligraphy.
