Yuhan Liang

PAINTER

Based in Hangzhou, b.1997

Yuhan Liang's work revolves around the themes of "space" and "belonging," exploring the relationship between nature, the urban environment, and the individual through the mediums of watercolor and acrylic. In her paintings, nature is not merely an external landscape but a refuge and spiritual sanctuary. She strives to break the boundaries of physical space, incorporating natural scenes into her personal domain, making them a part of her daily life, and thus creating an immersive, intimate viewing experience.

  • Her work does not only address the construction of physical space but also reflects on the psychological impact of the social environment on the individual. In the fast-paced urban world, people often find themselves constrained by their surroundings, with familiar living environments becoming both comforting and alienating. Through simplification, abstraction, and reworking of these spaces, she presents a conflicted psychological state—one that simultaneously seeks escape yet is trapped. This tension between wanting to break free and being confined is a core aspect of her exploration.

  • Philosophically, she emphasizes the autonomy of painting. Rather than aiming to replicate the real world, her focus is on creating visual order within the two-dimensional plane. She rejects traditional perspective and downplays spatial depth, instead emphasizing the plane’s formal qualities, composition, and color relationships to convey her subjective interpretation of reality. This approach represents a return to the essence of painting, asserting the unique value of the medium in response to the advances of photography and AI-generated art, which replicate reality in a highly detailed way.

  • In an age of digital overload, she envisions painting as a means to reveal what the eye cannot see—the emotions, memories, and reflections that are beyond surface-level perception. Through her art, she aims to evoke resonance in the viewer, sparking deeper layers of contemplation and thought.
