Yuanjing Sheng

Based in Kunming, b. 1990

Member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, Committee Member of the Kaishu Commission of Yunnan Calligraphers Association, Society Member of Jinghua Seal Society. Currently residing in Kunming and teaching at Yunnan University, previously served as a judge for national calligraphy competitions. His works have received awards and been exhibited over a hundred times in national competitions. Engaged in the imitation and creation of the five script styles (seal, clerical, cursive, running, regular), as well as the imitation and creation of ancient seals, Qin and Han dynasty seals, and various school styles. Conducts research on calligraphy history, calligraphy appreciation, and calligraphy aesthetics.

Guided by a highly idealized aesthetic, Sheng transcends the boundaries of classical appreciation, aspiring to embrace a diverse spectrum of beautiful forms.

  • Living in an era that affords a comprehensive view of renowned inscriptions and calligraphy through various media, Sheng grapples with the dual nature of this privilege. While fortunate to witness clear reproductions, there is a constant struggle with feelings of inadequacy in the face of their brilliance. In echoing Qian Zhongshu's sentiments, Sheng navigates this dichotomy, steering away from mere imitation and dependence, and instead, endeavors to learn from the ancients' learning process.
