"This piece is inspired by the concept of 'infant gaze tracking toys' and draws from my observations and reflections on the identity shifts experienced by the women around me. It explores how a woman navigates the balance between 'self' and 'other' after becoming a mother.
Many women, upon having children, gradually become the focal point of their child’s gaze—constantly watched, needed, and defined by their role as a mother. Meanwhile, their sense of self is temporarily set aside, sometimes even fading away. Some tuck away their individuality entirely to fully embody motherhood, while others, once they have put themselves aside, struggle to reclaim who they once were."
Through this work, Suman Weng invites us to reflect on the complexities of maternal identity and the silent tension between selfhood and sacrifice.
